  Dinner with family
I leave three weeks from today. It's creeping up on me faster than I realized.

Today we drove out to Jim's dad's ranch and had dinner with him and Jim's brother Brett, a Captain in the Marine Corps who is going to Iraq on February 10th. He just got married (coincidentally, by the same pastor who married us) in Vegas and won't even get to live with his wife before he takes off for a full year, and he's going into a warzone. It makes my sadness at leaving Jim behind for a month seem petty. Then again, we haven't been apart for more than a few days in 2 and a half years of marriage.

On the drive home we listened to some Elvis Costello and I tried to imagine where I'll be next month. No giant warehouses with obnoxious neon signs cluttering the view. None of the landscape ripped apart by millions of tons of paved roads and parking lots. No carpool lanes or late night fast food drive throughs.

Pitch black nights with countless stars, crowded markets, breathtaking children, the occasional roar of a hungry lion, and the disappearing snows of Mount Kilimanjaro... That's what I'll have to soak in.

I'm excited and nervous.
